Holy Baptism

Most commonly, we baptise babies and young children. Where adults and older children seek baptism, we will need to discuss what is involved with them.

If you live in one of our Parishes, or attend one of our Churches regularly, we can go ahead. If you have some other connection with the area, we would normally expect you to discuss your plans with the Rector of the Benefice.

Baptisms can take place at any of the five Churches. At St. Peter’s Shaldon and St. Andrew’s Stokeinteignhead, this may be within the Sunday Eucharist (10.30 at St. Peter’s, 11.00 at St. Andrew’s). At any of our Churches, Baptism may be done at other times and on other days, but the service will not then contain any music. A Sunday Baptism has to be fitted into a busy schedule, so not all times of the day are possible.

When choosing Godparents, please remember that they must have been baptised themselves. The norm is for two Godparents of the same sex as the child, and one of the opposite sex. One of each will do perfectly well, and there is no maximum, but a total of four is common.

The Church makes no charge for Baptism, but a donation is always appreciated.
